It was here that the British colonies got together and decided to rebel. This building has much significance in the history of America in more ways than one. The Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the design of the flag was adopted in this building. This building was constructed in 1732. It was designed by the architect Edmund Woolley. He received help from Andrew Hamilton, a prominent lawyer in Philadelphia. It was constructed as a Gregorian style brick building with a steeple. In 1876, a bell was donated to be a part of the building. The idea of the bell was to help ring in the centennial anniversary celebrations.

At the entrance of the hall, there are two bronze markers. One marker commemorates the flag raising by Abraham Lincoln and the other commemorates John Fitzgerald Kennedy. At the entrance there is a statue of George Washington. To the left of the entrance hall is the Pennsylvania Assembly Room. It was here that delegates form thirteen colonies adopted the Declaration of independence. Then there is the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chamber. This room is characterized by beautiful ochre-painted walls and the coat of arms of the Commonwealth. This was where trials once took place. One can see the prisoners dock and the jury boxes. The tower staircases themselves are simple and elegant and reflect the architectural style of the period. The second floor contains the Governor's Council Chamber. This was the room where the Royal Governor officially received members of the Pennsylvania Assembly. This room has the elaborate architecture of the 18th century. It is simple, elegant and official with a grandfather’s clock, telescope etc.

The second floor has a Long Gallery with nine windows overlooking the independence Mall. In 1745, this was one of the largest halls in Pennsylvania. Public events, supper and balls were once held here. Each room in the Independence Hall has witnessed significant events in the history of America. This makes it a prominent landmark in America.
