Taxis Biology

Taxis biology is the study of study of behavior of an organism in response to a stimulus. In this branch of biology, scientists endeavor study how an organism moves towards or away from the stimulus.

There are different types of movements to different sources of stimuli. For example, flagellate protozoans when exposed to light tend to move towards the source of the light. Here the stimulus is the light. This movement by the protozoans is construed as positive response to the light, and hence, termed as positive phototaxis. However, if any organism moves away from the source of the stimulus, it is known as negative taxis.

Therefore, based on the stimulus, different organisms show different responses. Response to wind is known as anemotaxis; response to pressure barotaxis; response to chemicals chemotaxis; response to an electrical current galvanotaxis; response to gravity geotaxis; response to moisture hydrotaxis; response to change in temperature is known as thermotaxis; and response to physical contact is referred to as thigmotaxis.

However, taxis biology is not just a response to a directional stimulus. One also needs to take into account the sensory organs of the organism. It is the sensory organs that allow the organisms to determine the direction of the stimulus, and thereby moving towards or away from it. Based on the sensory organs, the movement or response to the stimulus is known as klinotaxis where the organism actually samples the surrounding environment to figure out in which direction the stimulus is; tropotaxis where the organism has bilateral sensory organs that allow it to check out the direction of the stimulus; and finally there is telotaxis where the organism just has a single sensory organ that allows it orientate its movement.
