Biodiversity Resources In Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a rich source of biodiversity as far as plants and animals are concerned. The flora of Saudi Arabia covers about 2,250 plant species, out of which some 246 species are considered regionally endemic. Today, there are 15 sensitive areas that are protected by the government and these areas cover about 4 percent of the country’s land mass.

These areas consist of wetlands, mountains and marine habitats and endangered plants and animals. Saudi Arabia is not all desert as people would imagine. The country astonishingly also has about 2.7 million hectares of woodlands.

The Juniper woodlands are the most densely wooded habitats in the country. In order to protect the diversity of the country, the government prepared a strategy for the National Biodiversity Committee. The strategy was then submitted to the Ministry Council for further consideration. Today, there are extensive national efforts to enhance the overall environmental awareness amongst the people. Emphasis is also laid on the conservation of the protected areas.

The national biodiversity protection plan provides protection for about 10 percent of the kingdom’s area. These protected areas are marine as well as terrestrial, and they conserve ecosystems and physiographic features. Saudi Arabia allows access to any of the areas provided that the concerned party states in writing that the material will be used for research purposes and not for commercial use. The national bylaws are very strict for any type of criminal activities such as deforestation and poaching. Researchers are using the best of their studies and knowledge to conserve the natural habitats and also stressing on traditional lifestyles for conservation of relevant biodiversity.

How-Does-Ecologist-Explain-Biodiversity      Today, we see that the job of the ecologist is the explanation of biodiversity to the masses in the simplest of the ways. An ecologist applies his knowledge across many scientific disciplines to sustain the biodiversity and offer protection not just to endangered plants and animals but also to entire ecosystems. More..
