Research of over 20 years shows that about 12 percent of the plant species in the Amazon forests have become rare, and are on the brink of extinction. There has been a tremendous loss of biodiversity in the Amazon forests in the last decade mainly because of man’s quest for economic benefits. |
At present, there are major changes needed in the global forest management strategies to save the Amazon from further deforestation. And, the worst part is that the endangered species are found only in certain areas of the Amazon forests and hence, if that area is denuded of trees, these endangered species would not be able to relocate. This would lead to the extinction of many of these endangered species.
However, there have been new species that have been discovered in the Amazon. But efforts must be made to conserve the present species as each of them is important to maintain the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Remember, in an ecosystem are species are interdependence, and the loss of one species will affect all the species.
There have also been a lot of logging activities in the Amazon as a result of which the animals have lost their natural habitat. There have been cases of smuggling of illegal timber from the Amazon as well not to forget poaching of animals by hunters who sell animal parts for thousands of dollars in different parts of the world.
The Amazon rainforests are home to about a little less than half of the land species, and there are still many species waiting to be discovered. Efforts in the direction of global forest management should be brought into perspective to save these forests from further destruction.
