Mountain Ecology In Michoacan

Michoacan is one of the most rugged regions in Mexico. This region is marked by many depressions as well as huge elevations. Michoacan consists of two large Mexican mountain ranges, which are called the Sierra Madre del Sur and the Transversal Volcanic Sierra. The topography tends to become flatter in the north. The Zamora and the Maravatio valleys are situated in this area.

The Transversal Volcanic Sierra is often referred to as the Sierra del Centro in the local language.

You will also find many hills and volcanoes, and some of them are Patamban, San Miguel Hills, San Andres and the famous Paricutin Volcano. The other major volcanoes include Zacapu Volcanoes, Pico de Quinceo. There are 55 volcanic craters as well in the Sierra de Tancitaro region and 26 volcanic craters in the region of Paricutin volcano.

You can also find the famous valleys such as Churumuco, Tuzantla and Huetamo in the flat area called the Tierra Caliente. Here you will also find the tallest peaks in the country such as Inguaran, Picos de Cucha and El Jorullo Volcano. However, the highest peaks are found at Coalcoman and Aguililla.

The biodiversity of the Michoacan region is extremely vast. The higher elevations of the Sierra Madre del Sur are occupied by pine and oak forests. These forests are part of the chain that start from southwestern United States and spread all the way to Costa Rica. The lower reaches of the Sierra Madre del Sur have dry tropical forests. On the western side of the mountain range, you will find Jalisco dry forests, while the southern Pacific side has dry forests. The Balsas dry forests are found in the Balsas River basin, which is located on the northern part of the Sierra.

The Michoacan region is home to many different types of birds and wildlife including the Monarch butterfly, humming birds, jays, pelicans, tapir, monkeys, ocelot, puma, paca and deer.
