Following list gives you some of the latest news and information from the chemistry world.Use of Osmium: A recent report has suggested that presence of osmium, which is considered to be a rare element, in core soil samples can help in discovering and tracing industrial activities of humans in ancient times. Osmium is considered to be one of the least found elements on the Earth’s surface and is released as a by product of activities such as smelting or mining.

Increased exposure to chemicals: According to a report issued by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, it is believed that people in United States are being increasingly exposed to hazardous chemicals like perfluorinated chemicals, diphenyl ether flame retardants and bisphenol A. The report also mentions 75 new chemicals which were previously not found in the American population.

Closer view of atoms and molecules: There were several instances in 2009 when the chemists were able to get a very close look at the atoms and molecules. Leo Gross from IBM Research, along with some co-workers was successful in getting an image of pentacene using the scanning force microscope. Some members from Kharkov Institute for Physics and Technology in Ukraine were also able to successfully image the electron density neighboring a carbon atom.
