Geography literally means "earth description" in Greek. Geography encompasses the study of our planet, its climatic conditions, the various land forms on the planet and the different natural occurrences. |
It includes the spatial analysis of human and natural phenomena, the exploration of earth sciences and the relationship between nature and human life. Basically, the study of geography seeks to descibe and explains the distribution of phenomena that characterize our planet's surface. In doing so, it seeks answers to various questions like
Planet Earth is characterized by an amazing variety of attributes. They include, but are not limited to, physical features such as climates, landforms, and natural vegetation. They also include human beings, their attributes, and other aspects such as cities, towns, agriculture, transportation systems, and industries. Likewise, there are physical geographers and human geographers. The physical geographers study the physical aspects mentioned above.
Human geographers can be broadly classified as urban, regional, and environmental planners,cultural geographers, regional and area specialists, economic geographers, political geographers, transportation analysts, location analysts depending on their areas of interest.
In the era of globalization, the study of geography has become all the more relevant. It brings about awareness on areas like cultural diversity, climate change, lifestyle, natural calamities and technical hazards amongst others. The knowledge is also useful in the development of business, industry and social services in different regions.
