Statistics In Astrophysics

Astrophysics is frequently statistics in nature. Statistics is an art as well as science so it should be used wisely as a tool. Astrophysics is often a major issue. Observations aren’t made in physical quantities; hence there can be enormous uncertainties in our results.

Statistical significance may not be representative. Since 19th century, astrophysics played a vital role in the development of statistics, but later it drifted apart as statistics turned toward human affairs. But still, today statistics is very important for the study of the study in astrophysics. Astronomers cannot derive an observation without the use of statistics.
The need for Statistics was realized by Newton. Newton’s law of the motion of the heavens which was based on law of gravity, created a need for statistics.

Hence a variety of statistical practices were derived for astrophysics. Astronomers always needed a way to reduce the data; therefore they need statistics in their studies. Huge amount of statistics is also a burden for astronomers as they like their observations and derivations with fewer amounts of statistical data. Thanks to computers that had made it easy for astronomers to study more about astrophysics with more use of statistics.

Statistics is a very vital part of astrophysics nowadays. No result can be derived without the use of statistics. Every data is in the form of statistics nowadays. The growth of statistics is so large that it’s been in use in every field from social to technical field. Therefore use of statistics in astrophysics is essential and can’t be ignored.
