Branches Of Metaphysics

The word “metaphysics” means beyond (meta) nature (physics). Metaphysics talks about the nature of being or existence.  It is one of the greatest studies of philosophy by Aristotle.   Based upon his works and books, metaphysics can be divided into three branches – Ontology, Natural Theology and Universal Science.

Ontology – the study of existence as opposed to nothingness.  Ontology does not deal with how things work.  It is the “science of being”.  Aristotle calls this branch as the “first philosophy”.

The term “ontologia” was coined in 1613 by Rudolf Göckel and Jacob Lorhard who were German philosophers.  Christian Wolff who was a German rationalist philosopher popularized the term. It was Wolff’s belief that ontology could bring to light the essences of things.  His ideas were later classified as formal ontology.  Edmund Husserl, the German Founder of phenomenology distinguished it from regional ontologies like religion, culture, mind, mathematics and nature.

Natural Theology – It is the study of religion and involves studying about a God or Gods.   Ti talks about the world, its existence and its creation.  As atheists do not believe in a supernatural being, it is mostly a study of what people think is real and if a god does exist, then his purpose, his being and his needs.  It is mostly the calculated speculation of a detached outsider rather than one who is a devotee.

Universal Science – deals with finding answers forfirst principles”.  It talks about the laws of logic and reasoning which is the basis of all science or “being qua being”.  It may be a difficult branch of philosophy to understand as it includes topics such as relation and interaction, substance, elements and species.

No matter in whatever discipline metaphysics is regarded in, it still is natural and thus a part of physics.
