When Did The Social Sciences Come About ?

The term “Social Science” is referred to any or all branches of study that deals with the social relations of human beings.

Although the history of this sciences is rooted in our ancient philosophy, but the actual implementation of scientific methods in this science came about in the 18th century. The actual origin of this came from the philosophical study of moral values and time and was highly influenced by the various revolutions like that of French and Industrial revolution.

The 18th century social science, which is considered to be the beginning, was mainly centered on Economics only. Although social behavior of human has been a major field of study since ancient days, but the root of modern scientific methods starts only from this century, which is termed as Enlightenment. However, by the end of 19th century the Enlightenment philosophy faced many challenges and developed in many other domains including Anthropology, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology as well. As a result, the 19th century science is marked with many theories such as that of Karl Marx, Herbert Spencer and Auguste Comte.

With the turn of the 20th century, a huge revolution came about in this field of sciences marked with quantitative methods and statistical calculations. Various mathematical and experimental studies were introduced with the advent of this century in order to give a structural figure to the theoretical studies. This is the starting of practical application of this science study directly. The 20th century social science is involved with increased quantitative and qualitative methods implemented in the study of human behavior.
