Anthropology refers to the study of human beings and various aspects of the life of man. |
The word anthropology derives its origin from the greek words “anthropos” meaning man and “logy” meaning the science of. Thus, anthropology to put it simply means the study of man and the different aspects of man. Anthropologists are involved in the gathering of data, organizing it, understanding and drawing conclusions from it. One means of gathering data is the study of fossils. Anthropology involves the study of man over the years from the past to the present day. There are four main branches of anthropology each studying the different aspects that influence the life of man and together all the branches are able to provide all that is needed for a good understanding of the human species and the related aspects.
There are four main branches of anthropology, namely, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, biological anthropology and archeology. Anthropology acknowledges that culture is an important aspect that affects the life of the human species. The different practices and cultural norms that have been followed by the different societies are an integral part of anthropology dealt with by cultural anthropology.
Linguistic anthropology on the other hand, deals with language that is another of the aspects that makes man different from the other living creatures. The origin of language and its development over the years are all a part of the study of linguistic anthropology. Biological anthropology as the term suggests is that branch of anthropology that deals with the physical aspects of man and his evolution over the years. Archeology is the branch that gathers all the required information through the archaeological remains and puts together information about the life and evolution of man and the influences that have had an impact on his life.
