Most often, our actions are the consequences of the decisions we take in life. |
If you are intrinsically a good person, you will always do what you have been given to believe are ‘the good things.’ For example, a married man who believes in being ethically correct will not give in to temptation and remain faithful to his wife. He chooses to follow certain rules of how he wants to live his life.Consequently, some people have a bit of the devil in them. They indulge in vices, are generally mean people and are those types you would often encounter who revel in stepping on people’s toes.
This is ethics philosophy.
We encounter this in our lives almost everyday. Examine these thoughts – surely some similar ones have entered your mind at some point in life: Do I tell her he has cheated on him? Should I confess that the project suffered because of my decision making? Should I bypass the manager and go directly to the big boss and speak to him to get my work done, especially since I’ve already consulted the manager? Will he hold it against me if I get out of making that payment? I find myself attracted to her husband, is that wrong?
Socrates (469 BC – 399 BC) encouraged man to examine the condition of man. He propounded that if man were to be aware of whom he truly is and what the consequences of his actions will be, then he will lead an ethical life. Surely you’ve seen it reflected in the films, plays, music and art all around you – almost all employ this thought and these beliefs in their creative works.
This is Socrates’ equation to a happy life: knowledge = virtue =Happiness. Save your soul is the moral of the ethics branch of study.
