Abnormal psychology is the branch of psychology that deals with abnormal behavior and psychopathology. |
The first question that pops up is the understanding of what is abnormal. Abnormal in simple words is unlike the normal way of functioning. Abnormal does not always refer to being bad. It can be good. We have abnormal cases of memory, intelligence, strength etc. These are good and healthy and are found in certain people but there are cases where abnormal means bad. The dividing line between good and bad among things that are abnormal is whether the abnormality is troublesome, problematic and disturbing. If such is the case, medical help needs to be sought. There are various ways that you can treat abnormal psychology cases. Depending on the case, the best method ought to be used for the patient to get better. The behavioral approach uses the method of diagnosis of observed behavior. This manner of handling abnormal psychology only takes of the behavior and not the real issue. The medical approach uses medicine to primarily address the problem biologically. This can only be used if the case is physical disorders, a chemical imbalance or even if it is genetically passed down.
The cognitive approach to the problem tackles the inside problem first. It addresses what the mind is undergoing in order for these affects to take place. A well used method is a combination the cognitive and the behavioral method called cognital behavioral therapy so that both the external reaction and the inside issues can be solved resolving the issue completely.
