It is a social science that studies the society and its different aspects. The interaction of people with one another and as an organized community, the structure and development of society through time are all part of this vast branch of study. Sociology makes use of varied tools to make note of, understand, and make a critical analysis of the social activities associated with humans. The study and observations made through the years is what has helped in understanding the behavior of different units and how they influence the larger whole. With newer techniques and tools developed, the results obtained too have been good and one that facilitates future study.

It is an area of study that dates back to the 19th century. Although Comte is regarded as the father of sociology, it is the works and efforts of Emile Durkheim of France that has made a major contribution to this branch of study and has helped it to develop further.

The family, cultural influences in a society, language, caste and religion are all significant parts of the study of sociology. Efforts are continuously made to study intricately and further broaden the purview of the field. Sociology encompasses within its area of study both micro and macro issues and thus, deals with matters keeping in mind the finer details as well as the larger picture. Sociology is offered as a subject for study in most colleges and universities and formal training is imparted.
