History is a study of the past and thus, is based on the available data in different forms. The historian with the data is able to derive detailed conclusions regarding the behavioral pattern of the people in the past and as to how societies at different places and time periods existed. History too deals with societies and the interaction of humans with one another, the living conditions at the time and how man forms himself into communities and developed over the years. Sociology and history have several overlapping aspects although history deals with specific societies while sociology on the other hand, is a study of different societies and also makes comparisons between various societies so as to understand the similarities and differences that exist. Sociology takes into account the larger picture and deals with the broader  aspect of the development of societies and interaction of humans. Thus, while history deals with the individual societies, sociology deals with human societies as a whole but both are concerned with man and the way he lives.

History deals with societies, settlements and civilizations of the past. Sociology makes use of a lot of data provided by the historians to develop a methodology that allows the sociologists to understand the societies of the past and present.

Inspite of dealing with different aspects, both sociology and history are inter-related in several ways as they deal with the study of human beings and their development in communities over the years. The two branches of study provide a treasure house of information that enable us to understand the developments over time and how man has evolved over time.
